Travel health educational courses

Diploma in Travel Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPSG)
 
This multidisciplinary course is available to any health professional working in a relevant field. For nurses, a first level degree is not a prerequisite, but evidence of ability to study at post graduate level will be required. Proof of professional qualifications and references will be sought. Applicants must be competent with the following computer skills: email; internet searching; saving and managing word documents; word processing.
Course Structure
 
This is a blended e-Learning course. It takes a full calendar year to complete and usually commences in March each year. It comprises three modules and includes:
  • Attendance at a (compulsory) residential introductory week (usually March) in Glasgow.
  • Completion of Module 1 comprising 10 e-Learning units of core material with assignments.
  • Attendance at a (compulsory) residential mid-term week (usually September) in Glasgow.
  • Completion of a practical exam in Glasgow during the mid-term week.
  • Completion of Module 2 comprising 10 e-Learning units of self study with practical exercises (assessed in final written exam).
  • Completion of Module 3 comprising a project carried out over three months
  • Completion of the *final exam comprising two written papers.
    (* Overseas students may arrange to take the written exam in their country of residence at the discretion and with prior agreement of the RCPSG Examinations office).
Support
 
 
All students are allocated a personal advisor. The personal advisor provides guidance and advice on practical aspects of completion of course work, and offers support if students if difficulties arise. In addition, library services, access to the course website and TRAVAX (the NHS online travel health website) are provided. Students also have access to online staff/student communication.
Award of the Diploma
 
Students must pass all three modules for the Diploma to be awarded. Award of the Diploma is through the RCPS (Glas.) and at the discretion of the Exam Board. Students who successfully complete the Diploma are invited to the RCPS Admissions Ceremony held in the Bute Hall, University of Glasgow. Successful students are also eligible to direct entry to the Faculty of Travel Medicine, RCPSG, as Associate Members.

  • Internet connection, preferably broadband, but 56k dial up modem is possible.
  • Internet Explorer Version 6 or higher.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 7.

  • Attendance at a (compulsory) two day introductory residential component in Glasgow at the start.
  • Completion of 4 e-Learning units of core material with assignments including:
    • Pre- travel risk assessment; Infections and epidemiology of infections 1.
    • Infections and epidemiology of infections 2.
    • Immunisation theory, practice and available vaccines.
    • Malaria.
Support
All students are allocated a personal advisor. The personal advisor provides guidance and advice on practical aspects of completion of course work, and offers support if students if difficulties arise. In addition, library services, access to the course website and TRAVAX (the NHS online travel health website) are provided. Students also have access to online staff/student communication.
Foundation Certificate
Students must pass all four units for the completion certificate to be awarded. Work is assessed by Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and the certificate is awarded by HPS.

Introductory Courses (TREC)
'TREC' (Travel Health Related Education and Care) courses are designed for registered health care professionals who are either new to the field of Travel Health Care or wishing to update and expand their current knowledge.
2 Day Travel Health and Vaccination Courses - Established in Jan. 2000, these popular travel health courses are organised throughout the year in various UK venues. Places are limited to a maximum of 25 per course to allow for informal discussion and sharing of ideas and issues. The courses are approved and supported by Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and accredited by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN)
General Immunisation Study Day - A recent addition to the TREC programme, this RCN accredited study day has been developed in response to requests from health care professionals who require a general immunisation update (not travel vaccines). The day will include the topics recommended in the National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training Guidance (adult vaccines only) and provide the opportunity to update annual CPR certification requirement. Open to any registered health care professional but will be of particular relevance to occupational health staff.

MSc Global Health, Brighton and Sussex Medical School
The MSc in Global Health is a full time, one year modular taught course, comprising 5 taught modules and a dissertation. Annual Residential Course (London)
A one week practical course in travel medicine organised by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with practical aspect undertaken at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases. This course is designed primarily for general practitioners and practice nurses who provide a pre-travel health service. It aims to provide them with an opportunity to develop and update their knowledge and skills in travel medicine.

Membership of the faculty of Travel Medicine (MFTM)
The Faculty of Travel Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow is pleased to announce the development of a new assessment. Success will provide the main route into Membership of the Faculty.
The examination is for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, principally pharmacists, who have been in whole time, or cumulative part time travel medicine practice for one year and who demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development.
The format of the examination is a multiple choice paper lasting 3 hours, including 100 single best answers and 100 extended matching item questions, and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) consisting of 15 stations.
Upcoming dates for examination:
  • Part 1 - Written 8 November 2011.
  • Part 2 - OSCE      May 2012.

Desert medicine course
Days are spent in the field learning essential medical and survival skills and there are also evening lectures. The course is based in Damaraland situated between the Namib Desert, the Kalahari, Ovamboland and the Skeleton Coast. 10-20 CPD points

Diving and marine medicine

Jungle medicine
The course aims to introduce participants to the practical skills required in a jungle environment, ranging from the treatment of snake bites to the identification of tropical diseases and the management of heat-related illness, in addition to survival skills.
